Two major cultural influences are evident everywhere in Detroit. The first is the city’s automotive heyday, represented by Art Deco architecture like the 40-story Guardian Building and Albert Kahn’s Fisher Building, and the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, the birthplace of the Model T. The second is the Motor City Sound, formally memorialized at the Motown Museum, a.k.a. Hitsville U.S.A., but paid homage to in public art, historic spaces and diners all over town. In the 21st century, Detroit is working to become a model of urban renewal with the three-mile RiverWalk for outdoor recreation and gorgeous views of the skyline, the Detroit River and Windsor, Ontario Canada; municipal support of community-building spaces like Eastern Market, the largest historic farmers’ market in the U.S., and vibrant, revitalized neighborhoods like Brush Park, Grand Circus Park and New Center.
